Studio 107-B is located in the Heart of Taos, New Mexico on the northeast end of Historic Taos Plaza. Máye Torres brings 40 years of experience to the Gallery as an internationally known artist. She is assisted by her sons; renowned glass artist Isaiah Trujillo, who’s art is collected worldwide, Zach Trujillo, composer and accomplished pianist and Matthias Trujillo, PhD in Chemical Engineering.
Torres follows in the footsteps of her Mother, gallerista and owner of New Directions Gallery, in the same location for 17 years. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the space was her grandparents, Arturo and Teodora Martinez y Salazar’s bar, Fernandez de Taos Bar and Tavern.
Meet Máye Torres, Gallery Owner & Internationally Known Artist
Influenced by the great artists of Taos, Maye Torres’s work transcends boundaries and the mundane. Specializing in large scale drawings and sculpture, (in ceramics and bronze), she has developed a unique style of art that reflects our global culture. As a child, she was raised in New Mexico and Latin America and was deeply influenced by their cultures, arts, and spiritual beliefs.
For the past 40 years, Torres has been challenging traditional approaches to art, focusing on experimental and innovative imagery that combines philosophy, history, global cultures and
cosmology. Her award-winning art is in countless private and public collections around the world, including LACMA, Laguna Art Museum, Mexican Fine Art Center in Chicago, Capitol Arts Foundation Collection (Santa Fe), The Harwood Museum of Art (Taos) and 3 New Mexico Arts 1% for the Arts Commissions. She was the inspiration behind the internationally recognized and award-winning Film: “Who Does She Think She Is?”.
In 2014 Torres was invited by the US Ambassador in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to exhibit and teach youth art classes through an art exchange with the US Department of State’s, Art In Embassies Program. Ms. Torres has also been the recipient of three New Mexico Arts commissions, (1% for the Arts), in Raton, Taos and Albuquerque and in 1986, she was 26 and won the prestigious Best of Show in the Taos Fall Arts Festival.
